"I think he has bitten off more than we can chew"
Roberta Shakoori
Sacramento
Referring to Bush's move on Social Security
"The jury is still out."
George W. Bush
When asked about the “controversy over teaching
evolution”
"Other than telling us how to live, think, marry, pray, vote,
invest, educate our children and, now, die, I think the Republicans have
done a fine job of getting government out of our personal lives."
Graig Carter, Northeast Portland.
Todays political conservatives are our cultural luddites.

"A little patience and we shall see the reign of witches pass
over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight,
restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the
meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a
war and long oppressions of enormous public debt... If the game runs sometimes
against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall
have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this
is a game where principles are at stake."
Thomas Jefferson, 1798, after passage of the Sedition Act

BUSINESS
LEADERS FOR SENSIBLE PRIORITIES
Star Wars Is Back. Heaven Help Us Taxpayers.
Background on the Star Wars:
The Bush Administration plans to deploy a national missile defense system
in California and Alaska by September 2004. America's taxpayers already
have sunk $130 billion into this program, with nothing to show for it. This
year's Administration's budget request for Star Wars is another $10.2
billion. Thomas Christie, director of the Pentagon's testing office, has
admitted to Congress that there is no way to determine whether the system
will work.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket
fired signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are
not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms
is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of it laborers,
the genius of its scientists and the hopes of its children" —
President Dwight D. Eisenhower, April 16, 1953

David
Brock, a former Republican activist, has started a new and very important
web site called Media Matters for America
www.mediamatters.org
It has been well documented that the far right has assumed a stronger and
more strident voice in the media than middle and left. Some of these
commentators, such as Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, have little regard
for the truth and spin and twist facts at best. MMA will document and
correct conservative misinformation in each news cycle. Media Matters for
America will monitor cable and broadcast news channels, print media and
talk radio, as well as marginal, right-wing websites that often serve as
original sources of misinformation for well-known conservative and
mainstream media outlets. Bookmark this site and go to it often for the
real skinny.

A
DEMOCRACY CAN DIE OF TOO MANY LIES
May 17, 2005 | I can't imagine better company on this beautiful Sunday
morning in St. Louis. You're church for me today, and there's no
congregation in the country where I would be more likely to find more
kindred souls than are gathered here.(Read the

JUDGE
NOT
King Solomon, hearing the case of Harlot v. Harlot , in which two women
laid claim to the same baby, proposed cleaving the child in half. This, in
turn, ferreted out the real mother, who gave up the baby rather than see it
die. "And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had
rendered," says the Bible, "and they stood in awe of the king,
because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him, to render
justice.". (Read the rest here)
STARTING
TO SENSE A PATTERN HERE?
This morning comes word that James E. West, the Republican Mayor of Spokane,
Washington, is leaving two youth group boards amidst allegations that he
molested two boys and "recently offer[ed] a City Hall internship to
someone he met in a gay online chat room" Interestingly, James E. West
has long been an opponent of gay rights, including while he was State
Senate majority leader. (Read the rest

RIGHT
HOOK
May 5, 2005 | With the Senate back in session next week and the moment of
reckoning upon the Republicans' so-called nuclear option to wipe out the
judicial filibuster, the rhetoric from the far right has gone radioactive. (Read the rest here)
JON
CAROLL
The following is the first communique from a group calling itself Unitarian
Jihad. It was sent to me at The Chronicle via an anonymous spam remailer. I
have no idea whether other news organizations have received this
communique, and, if so, why
they have not chosen to print it. Perhaps they fear starting a panic. I
feel strongly that the truth, no matter how alarming, trivial or
disgusting, must always be told. I am pleased to report that the words
below are at least not disgusting:. (Read

WHERE
ARE ALL THE GOOD CHRISTIANS?
I know they're out there.
I forget, often, too often, just how many there are but I know they
exist in much larger numbers than you might be led to believe by current
spiritually embarrassing headlines and I know they are just as, if not
more, passionate and healthy and deeply felt in their beliefs than the
overpublicized sects of angry and frothing "true believers"
screeching into the megaphone of the culture, the ones yanking BushCo's
chain and pounding their Bibles and hiding their warped porn fetishes and
forcing their way into our lives and laws and bedrooms right now. (Read the rest here)
THE
JUDGES MADE THEM DO IT
It was appalling when the House majority leader threatened political
retribution against judges who did not toe his extremist political line.
But when a second important Republican stands up and excuses murderous
violence against judges as an understandable reaction to their decisions,
then it is time to get really scared.(Read

POLITICS
IN ACTION
By SENATOR J. DANFORTH
St. Louis — BY a series of recent initiatives, Republicans have
transformed our party into the political arm of conservative Christians.
The elements of this transformation have included advocacy of a
constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, opposition to stem cell
research involving both frozen embryos and human cells in petri dishes, and
the extraordinary effort to keep Terri Schiavo hooked up to a feeding tube.

A PARTY INVERTED
By SENATOR BILL BRADLEY
FIVE months after the presidential election Democrats are still pointing
fingers at one another and trying to figure out why Republicans won. Was
the problem the party's position on social issues or taxes or defense or
what? Were there tactical errors made in the conduct of the campaign? Were
the right advisers heard? Was the candidate flawed? (Read the rest here)

WE'RE
NOT IN WATERGATE ANYMORE
By FRANK RICH - July 10, 2005
WHEN John Dean published his book "Worse Than Watergate" in the
spring of 2004, it seemed rank hyperbole: an election-year screed and yet
another attempt by a Nixon alumnus to downgrade Watergate crimes by
unearthing worse "gates" thereafter. But it's hard to be
dismissive now that my colleague Judy Miller has been taken away in
shackles for refusing to name the source for a story she never wrote. No
reporter went to jail during Watergate. No news organization buckled like
Time. No one instigated a war on phony premises. This is worse than
Watergate.(Read the rest here)
IRAQ--CREDIBILITY,
RESPONSIBILITY, ACCOUNTABILITY
By SENATOR BARBARA BOXER - July 6, 2005
Last week, President Bush had a chance to regain credibility when it comes
to Iraq. In my opinion, he did not.
He mentioned 9/11 five times in 30 minutes, despite the fact that there is
absolutely no connection between Iraq and that tragic day.
