Economy
"We are a long way from getting back the jobs lost since President
Bush took office. Our goal must be to restore full employment, and to do that
it will be necessary not only to recover all the jobs lost in the recession,
but also to create enough new jobs to accommodate the growing labor force. We’re
nowhere near that." -- Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Joint Economic
Committee Senior Democrat
"[The President's] huge deficits are not just an accounting
problem. They are a moral problem because our children and grandchildren will
be forced to repay the record amounts of debt we are borrowing today."
-- Rep. John Spratt (D-SC), House Budget Committee Senior Democrat
The
Democratic Party: Working to Keep America Working
More jobs have been lost under Bush than we’ve experienced since the Great
Depression. Indeed, George W. Bush has returned the country to economic
hard times with families either worried whether their jobs are secure or-for
the 9 million unemployed, whether America is still the land of milk and
honey that rewards those of us who work hard and play by the rules.

What
did George W. Bush do with America's Prosperity?
As Americans, we feel lucky to live in the most prosperous country on the
planet. Our optimistic, can-do attitude coupled with traditional American
ingenuity, determination, and a little elbow grease, creates jobs, wealth,
and opportunity envied the world over. But the record shows that how well
our economy does depends on who sits in the White House.

Business and the Economy
California Democrats, concerned with improving business and the economy,
have accepted the challenge created by the terrorist attacks of September
11, 2001, which permanently changed "our California way of life." Californians
have always counted on Democrats to promote business and agriculture,
which in turn continue to create good jobs for all Californians.

Prosperity and Fiscal Discipline
Eight years ago, America was facing a big challenge. Under the Bush-Quayle
Administration, the American economy was floundering. Slow growth had
turned into no growth and into a jobless recovery. Americans in all walks
of life were facing a future of less prosperity and more resignation.
In 1992, Bill Clinton and Al Gore were elected to turn the American economy
around and point upward toward the future.
They took office with a new set of ideas about how to get the economy
moving again. They knew that the private sector is the engine of economic
growth, but they also knew that, in Franklin Roosevelt's phrase, "the
national community" - acting through government - can make a big difference.
