John T. Doolittle is not a conservative by any definition of that word. He has voted for bigger government, with deficits to match, for the past five years. During the Bush administrations, discretionary spending has risen 10% per year while under Clinton’s 8 years, it only rose 4%.

Doolittle has supported Patriot Acts 1 and 2 which curtail civil liberties in ways worthy of a totalitarian regime. He has voted for an illegal war for reasons that he knew were false.

Doolittle is fond of calling his opponents “Communists,” “Socialists,” “Eco Marxists,” and the usual extreme right wing vocabulary made popular by Father Coughlin, Joe McCarthy, and the John Birch Society. The extreme Right resorts to name-calling to avoid justifying bad policies.

THEREFORE, it is time for Progressives to push back and to call Doolittle and his mentor Tom DeLay what they are: Neo-Fascists. Fascism is defined as: “A right wing authoritarian political movement…” The first proponent of Fascism was Mussolini, but also included such worthies as Salazar of Portugal, Franco of Spain, Peron of Argentina, and Pinochet of Chile, to name a few. Hitler’s Nazism was Fascism on steroids. None of these states called itself “Fascist”. They called themselves “right-wing governments”

When asked to define “Fascism,” Mussolini, said:

“Fascism should be called ‘Corporatism,’ for it merges corporate interests with those of the State.”

Rendering American unions powerless is at the top of the Bush agenda, and his willing stooges for accomplishing this are DeLay and Doolittle. .

“In the 1930s, Mussolini’s Corporatism, which created an unchecked industrial and business aristocracy, had appealed at the time as an effective counterweight to the New Deal. In 1934, Fortune Magazine lavished praise on the Italian dictator for his defanging of labor unions and his empowerment of industrialists at the expense of workers.” (Chris Hedges, Harper’s Magazine, May 2005 (p.61)

In Fascist states, corporations participate in the formulation of legislation or edicts—as lobbyists do today in Washington. Civil liberties are curtailed. Arrests without the right of counsel become routine and foreigners (or Jews, i.e. non-Christians) are blamed for political ills. Today, DeLay and Doolittle blame Mexicans, Arabs, etc. for our problems. Does this enumeration of horrors begin to ring a familiar bell?

Fascism favors militarism, and militarism automatically leads to military solutions to diplomatic problems. After all, what’s the point of having a huge military establishment if you’re not going to use it?

Mussolini (and Hitler) waged undeclared, illegal wars and were the first to use radio for propaganda purposes to whip up ultra-nationalism in support of those wars and to suppress political opposition. Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Savage and others were not the first to use hate radio for political ends.

FASCISM AND CHRISTIANITY

In the 70s, Dr. James Luther Adams, Professor at Harvard Divinity School warned his students that within their lifetimes they would be fighting “Christian Fascists.” Chris Hedges, one-time foreign correspondent for the New York Times, and a former student of Dr. Adams, writes in the May 2005 edition of HARPER’S MAGAZINE:

“He (Dr. Adams) gave us that warning (about having to fight Christian Fascists)…when Pat Robertson and other prominent evangelists began speaking of a new political religion that would direct its efforts at taking control of all major American institutions…so as to transform the United States into a global Christian empire. But Fascism, Adams warned, would not return wearing swastikas and brown shirts. Its ideological inheritors would cloak themselves in the language of the Bible and they would come carrying crosses and chanting the Pledge of Allegiance.”

“Adams told us to watch closely the Christian right’s persecution of homosexuals and lesbians. Hitler, he reminded us, promised to restore moral values not long after he took power…,and then imposed a ban on all homosexual and lesbian organizations and publications. Then came raids on places where homosexuals gathered…Homosexuals and lesbians would be the first ‘deviants’ singled out by the Christian right.”

Adams was prescient, but he had ample precedents upon which to base his predictions. Fascist states have generally enjoyed good-to-excellent relations with Christian churches. In 1929, Mussolini signed the Lateran Treaty with Pope Pius XI, by which Italy formally recognized the Vatican as a secular state, and made Catholicism the official Italian State religion.

The Lateran treaty also mandated the teaching of religion in Italian public schools, decreed that marriage is a sacrament, and made divorce, contraception and abortion illegal. If this sounds like the scenario Bush, DeLay and Doolittle have in mind for the U.S., you’re correct. All you need to do is update names and places, but the principles are the same.

Portugal, Spain, wartime France and many other fascist nations adopted similar laws. Salazar, Franco and Pinochet went to Mass every day.

Even Hitler had good relations with Germany’s main denominations: Lutheran and Catholic. As the New York Times of 4/22/2005 states: “The Roman Catholic Church is still haunted by its inglorious role in the nazi era.” The Lutheran Church also learned to accommodate itself to Hitler.

TODAY’S GOP RIGHT WING AND ITS FASCIST CREDENTIALS

No one in Congress embodies better the toxic and corrupting mixture of corporate money with State power and religion than John T. Doolittle and Tom DeLay. They symbolize the Christian Fascists Dr. Adams had in mind 30 years ago.

Tom DeLay and John T. Doolittle may not be Mussolinis—they don’t have his flair for showmanship--- but they think like he did: corporations pour money into their campaigns and therefore earn the privilege to write favorable tax and anti-labor laws. Religious tenets substitute for government policies and dissenters are demonized, intimidated, marginalized or, thanks to the Patriot Act, jailed.

In spite of the First Amendment’s protection FOR, and FROM, religion, Doolittle’s anti-choice, anti-women, pro-prayer, anti-civil rights, anti-human rights record suggests that religion plays THE central role in his political life. Doolittle’s religious agenda rates him 100% support from Pat Robertson’s “Christian Coalition” and from “Concerned Women of America”, whose founder, Beverly La Haye said: “Politicians who do not use the Bible to guide their political and personal decisions do not belong in office.”

Instead of taking care of our interests, De Lay and Doolittle throw Terri Schiavo and baseball steroids fairy dust in our eyes. While many of us were being taken in by these circuses, Doolittle voted for a bankruptcy reform bill, a gift to the banks and credit card companies, and a dagger aimed at the heart of middle class people who may have difficulty paying bills due to illness or loss of job. How dare he, when he knows that many of those people will be in his District?

Take a look at the Doolittle record below: He receives failing grades from every organization that promotes the welfare of children, women, minorities and the unfortunate. Even such staunchly conservative organizations as the AMA (American Medical Association) and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) give Doolittle failing grades.

Tom DeLay and John Doolittle are joined at their political hips and wallets, so as to be indistinguishable one from the other. California’s 4th District gets two Representatives embodied into one: DeLayDoolittle.

The danger today is similar to that of the 20s and 30s. Then, as now, progressive Americans did not understand the “the power and allure of evil” represented by the far right political movement. Still today, many Liberals expect the radical Christians to play by democratic rules even while those now in power have already started to dismantle our democracy while laying down the foundation of a theocracy.

DELAYDOOLITTLE’S DISRESPECT FOR THE CONSTITUTION

After the election of 2000, Doolittle declared to THE WASHINGTON POST:

“The power of the Presidency, coupled with a Republican Congress and conservative control of the Supreme Court, is nothing short of awesome. This is the implementation of the rest of the Contract With America.”

Apparently, Doolittle thought the day of the neo-fascist, single-party state had arrived!

Unfortunately, the Supreme Court was of another mind, so,

On March 9, 2004, Doolittle and eleven of his Far Right colleagues introduced H.R. 3920:

“A BILL to allow Congress to reverse the judgments of the United States Supreme Court. This Act may be cited as the “Congressional Accountability Judicial Activism Act of 2004.”

When he was sworn in as a Congressman, DeLayDoolittle swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States. No exceptions, no caveats. He broke that oath when he introduced this bill.

The introduction of this bill was an attempted coup d’etat, a stab at the soul of our Constitution that explicitly created independent courts to protect us from tyrannical or misguided representatives. Why didn’t the voters of California’s 4th District call Doolittle to account for not consulting them in this stealth attempt at changing the U.S.?

06/19/1999. John T. Doolittle voted to allow posting the Ten Commandments in schools and other public buildings. He also voted for amending the Constitution to allow prayers in schools.

DELAYDOOLITTLE’S DISRESPECT FOR HIS CONSTITUENTS

The 109th Congress has been in session for most of a year. Of 268 House Resolutions submitted so far, not a single one has been introduced or co-sponsored by Doolittle. We’re talking about Bills honoring Dr. Jonas Salk (HR 208), or recognizing VE Day (HR 233), or honoring Fire Fighters who gave their lives on 9/11 (HR 188). There’s nothing controversial there! What does this man do in Congress, beside defending Tom DeLay and raising money?

Before each election cycle, a non-partisan organization, “VOTE SMART” (www.vote-smart.org/npat) distributes a National Political Awareness Test (NPAT) to every one of our 535 Senators and Congressmen. This questionnaire’s only purpose is to elicit answers as to the positions of each Member of Congress on all the important issues that face our country.

The majority of Congress answer the questionnaire because it is a useful and easily accessible tool for constituents to know exactly where their Senators and Representatives stand on any issue.

In 1998, Congressman DeLayDoolittle answered approximately 40% of the questionnaire—mostly the easy questions. He has refused to answer questionnaires in 2000, 2002 and 2004, and declines to say why. DeLayDoolittle’s arrogance is well documented (“BOSS DOOLITTLE,” or “KING DOOLITTLE,” as he is known in Placer County.) His refusal to answer the questionnaire is another symptom of his arrogance.

There is only one logical reason DeLayDoolittle refuses to answer the NPAT: he runs the risk of having constituents ask unscripted and embarrassing questions.

Like all extremists, DeLayDoolittle does not accept dissenting views. Following are a few of his statements:

DELAYDOOLITTLE’S UNETHICAL CONDUCT

Doolittle has contributed $10,000 to DeLay’s defense fund, and has taken the lead in defending Tom DeLay’s misconduct, ethical lapses and probable illegal actions. His defense of DeLay elicited the following comments from “The Campaign Legal Center,” a non-partisan organization representing the public interest as regards campaign and media laws.

“Unfortunately, comments by Rep. John Doolittle in today’s ‘Washington Post’ provide a textbook example of what’s wrong with the ethics oversight process in the House. Before the DeLay complaint was even filed, and presumably without any knowledge about the merits of the allegations, Rep. Doolittle says he is prepared to retaliate by ginning up attacks against a member of the Democratic Leadership.
That’s the kind of ugly, brain-dead politics that’s made fair ethics oversight almost impossible.”

On November 12 and 22, 1993, Doolittle purchased close to $15,000 worth of DOMINION RESOURCES stock (a Virginia public utility company). On November 22, the day of Doolittle’s second purchase, the House of Representatives passed a bill (H.R.3400), with Doolittle voting ‘AYE’. This Bill favored DOMINION RESOURCES in its legal fight with the District of Columbia and helped push up the price of the stock.

DELAY INC. A LAWMAKER AMASSES POWER, AND USES IT (New York Times, 10/16/1999). Doolittle, who is part of DeLay’s Whip organization, praised DeLay: “I think he’s never been more influential than he is right now. “Sometimes it’s barbecue, Mr. Doolittle said, indicating how DeLay keeps his troops in line. Sometimes it’s fried chicken. Sometimes it’s pizza. Frequently it’s more than one of those things.” As land developers in Placer County and timber and oil interests already know, Doolittle is for sale: DeLay can buy him with pizza, but developers must produce cash.

Doolittle himself is under investigation for accepting, but not reporting, favors from lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Abramoff and his partner Michael Scanlon, long-time friends of DeLay and Doolittle, are under investigation for scamming Indian tribes of millions of dollars and financing “entertainment” outings for DeLay and Doolittle

Doolittle’s wife, Julie Doolittle, had her company’s records subpoenaed last year for the ongoing investigation of Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon.

Julie Doolittle’s firm (Sierra Dominion Financial Solutions, Inc.) is also under scrutiny for her handling of KORUSEC’s finances. KORUSEC is a Korean lobbying firm set up with the help of advisers to Tom DeLay, and under Federal investigation for possible illegal activities connected to DeLay, Doolittle and others.

Every year since 1995, Congressman Doolittle has failed his legal obligation to disclose his wife’s “HONORARIA” on Schedule I (Earned Income for Spouse) of the Financial Disclosure Statement filed yearly by all Congressmen.

“HONORARIUM” is defined as “a fee for services rendered by a professional person.” According to ‘ROLL CALL’ (Congress’s unofficial newspaper) Richard Robinson, spokesman for Doolittle, confirmed that “the Congressman’s wife handles the foreign agent’s (KORUSEC) finances” In other words, Mrs. Doolittle performs the tasks of a professional accountant and her HONORARIA should have been made public.

DELAYDOOLITTLE’S LIES AND HYPOCRI-SLEAZE

In September 1994, John Doolittle declared: “Government is too big, too intrusive, too easy with money.” Remember: this is the same guy who, for the past 5 years, has voted for the largest budget deficits in our history.

In 1995, Congressman Doolittle signed the “Contract with America”: After the 2000 election, he again committed himself to implementing the Contract with America:
o A balanced budget.
o Smaller government.
o An end to deficit spending.
o Term limits.
o A transparent government.
o A return of power to the States.

Doolittle is a liar. He has violated every one of those “promises”
In addition to voting for the largest deficits in our history,
He has voted for the largest growth of the Federal Govt. since WWII,
He has reneged on his term-limit oath,
He has tried to take power away from the States (e.g. Terri Schiavo case)
In 2004, he voted to render the House Ethics Committee completely powerless so as to save DeLay from further investigations.

Here are a few of DeLayDoolittle’s better hypocri-sleazoid moments:

Doolittle has given $10,000 to DeLay’s Defense Fund and accepted $19,375 for his own PAC from DeLay. Some people might call it “one hand washes the other,” while some other folks might call it “laundering money to avoid campaign financing laws.”

Doolittle has accepted campaign contributions from Anheuser-Bush. How can a practicing Mormon accept money from purveyors of alcohol?

Doolittle also accepted money and favors from Jack Abramoff knowing that this money came from Indian casinos. Since when can a practicing Mormon accept gambling money? (N.B. The typical politician’s excuse “I did not know where the money came from?” won’t wash in this case. Doolittle and his staff knew full well where the money came from

Tom DeLay and John Doolittle led the charge against Al Gore for accepting foreign campaign funds. Doolittle accepted money from foreign corporations: FORTIS INC. (Belgian), BAYER (German), BRIDGESTONE (Japanese) and ZURICH FINANCIAL SERVICES (Swiss) all contributed to his last campaign.

Tom DeLay accepted $78,500 from foreign PACs, including $11,500 from French companies. Apparently, serving French fries in the House cafeteria was a DeLay ‘NON-NON,’ but accepting French money was ‘OUI-OUI!’

Doolittle has accepted money from TITAN CORPORATION, while it is still under Federal investigation for violations of the Corrupt Foreign Practices Act (bribing foreign officials).

On October 28, 1992, “The Washington Post” reported on John Doolittle’s crusade against the abuses of the House Bank by several Congressmen. The Post also reported that, before the House scandal, “Doolittle lobbied the House Administration Committee for more perks. Among three pages of benefits that Doolittle…sought were leased cars and office refreshments at government expense, drivers to take members to the airport, $92 per day for expenses…”This is the case of the pot calling the kettle blacker than black

On 11/16/1995, The Sacramento BEE wrote: “For underhanded campaign tactics, it’s hard to beat the blatantly misleading mailer used by John T. Doolittle.”

On 11/06/1985, Businessman Bruce Ashwill was fined for illegally laundering money at the request of Doolittle’s staff.

In March 1986, the BEE wrote: “Doolittle introduced a bill that would oust the Fair Political Practices Commission official who had charged Doolittle with violating campaign laws.”

April 1, 1986: Doolittle denied any knowledge of his earlier campaign finance laws violations. However, his aide, who served as bagman, received a $10,000 bonus for his efforts.

In a three-way race in 1986, Doolittle surreptitiously sent several of his aides to work on the campaign of his weakest opponent in order to draw votes away from his main competitor. It worked: Doolittle was elected. Crime does pay!

February 6, 1987---“A NEW LEVEL OF SLEAZINESS” wrote the “BEE,” naming Doolittle “a master of the art of sleaze.” “What makes it even more interesting is that both instances involve Republicans … who ordinarily posture as defenders of morality.”

April 15, 1987---Doolittle and two aides were fined $3,000 each for campaign finance laws violations.

November 5, 1988: “HIT MAN DOOLITTLE”, reads the “BEE’s” headline, followed by:

“Even in politics, most candidates recognize some limits on what they will do or say to win an election. Not John Doolittle.”

“One limit most recognize is the law: Not John Doolittle.”

“Another limit most honor is the truth: Not John Doolittle.”

“Another limit most candidates recognize is common decency. Not John Doolittle”

wrote the “BEE.” In the last days of his campaign, he published a mailer accusing his opponent of being corrupt and immoral. These totally unfounded and untrue charges came too late for his opponent to rebut them.

In the 1988 campaign, Doolittle accused his opponent, a sheriff for 17 years, of “being soft on crime.” In the meantime, Doolittle introduced a bill to legalize the sale of concealable shotguns favored by armed robbers

“Tom DeLay is honest, he’s a member’s member.” John Doolittle quoted in the Washington Post (11/18/98). Yeah! and Doolittle is a master of the “suck-up” but a lousy judge of character!”

11/22/1994---DOOLITTLE PLEADS GUILTY, AGREES TO PAY FINE. John Doolittle, state Senator Tim Leslie and four GOP operatives agree to pay $8,000 fine. This fine was levied against Doolittle for failing to disclose contributions to Leslie’s campaign.

January 22, 1997---Doolittle was one of only 28 Representatives to vote against censuring Newt Gingrich, even though Gingrich had already pleaded guilty to ethics and campaign laws violations. Will Doolittle go down with the DeLay ship as he did with Gingrich’s?
In 1999, Doolittle backed a statewide initiative to cut state legislators’ salaries by 25%, but voted to increase his own salary 5% to $141,300 per year!

January 28, 2001---Once again, Doolittle’s finances come under scrutiny for laundering money into the campaign of Bruce Kranz in Placer County. During the same campaign, Doolittle hired his wife’s company as a consultant.

August 15, 2004---Headline from the BEE: “DOOLITTLE’S PAC PAYS HIS WIFE’S FIRM, SIERRA DOMINION FINANCIAL SERVICES INC.., $28,000.” At the time, this sum represented more than 10% of Doolittle’s entire PAC money.

Although technically legal, hiring one’s immediate relatives for princely sums hardly passes the ‘smell test.’ Such hirings are often subterfuges for using campaign contributions to illegally augment the family’s income. Doolittle makes close to $145,000 in salary alone, so he’s not yet in the poorhouse.

Also worthy of note: For years, Doolittle kept closely guarded the fact that his wife’s company was on his PAC payroll. Even the “Center for Responsive Politics”, which tracks congressional nepotism, was unaware of this. Only when the company’s records were subpoenaed for the Grand Jury investigation of the DeLay-Doolittle-Abramoff-Scanlon scandal did the public find out the cozy relationship between Sierra Dominion Financial and John Doolittle.

Why would Doolittle keep his wife’s business under wraps? You’d think he and Mrs. Doolittle would want to expand the business and advertise, if only by word of mouth. Let’s remember that this is the same Doolittle who feigned outrage at the Clintons’ Whitewater non-scandal. It’s time for Webster to redefine the word “HYPOCRITE”: ”A ‘hypocrite’, also known as a ‘Doolittle,’ is someone you should never trust.”

April 6, 2005---“THE HILL” reports that Doolittle hosted a reception for K St. lobbyists which reportedly raised “several hundred thousand dollars.”

A basic tenet of the CWA is that ‘feminism’ i.e. equality of women and men, is “anti-God and anti-family”

Beverly La Haye also said: “Politicians who do not use the Bible to guide their public and personal lives do not belong in office.” CWA will not divulge the source of its funding estimated at $12.7 million in 2000.

All the pro-gun lobbies back Doolittle 100%. Year after year, the NRA, has given DeLayDoolittle a score of A+. How much toadying and bootlicking must one do to get that extra +?

Retire Safe, and United Seniors Association give DeLayDoolittle a score of 100%. These organizations shill for the insurance and pharmaceutical lobbies and are pushing hard for privatization of Social Security.

Retire Safe is strictly a pro Big Drug front whose main agenda is to stop Americans from shopping for cheaper prescription drugs in Canada and elsewhere.

United Seniors Association was founded by Richard Viguerie, a well-known supporter and funder of right wing causes. This is the organization that recently hired Swift Boat Veterans For Truth to conduct the same smear campaign against the AARP that it conducted against Kerry.

Also supporting DeLayDoolittle all the way are: The American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Association of Manufacturers.

The Farm Bureau is the lobbying arm of large industrial farmers --the 5% of farmers that get 80% of the subsidies. It is also the group that encourages illegal immigration by providing jobs to those immigrants. This illegal activity gets a nod and a wink from DeLayDoolittle.

The NAM is a protectionist lobby for large industrial manufacturers. Both organizations have one thing in common with DeLayDoolittle: they care little for the average working person, and they want to get rid of unions and forbid strikes.

All these organizations share some common traits: they’re on the fringes of the political far right, and they have a single-issue agenda (taxes, abortion, guns, etc).
